The world has wondered with fear and trepidation, whether if the current person in the position of President were to order an unprovoked nuclear strike, whether pressing those secret codes would result in a thermo-nuclear catastrophe. Today we have some reassurance that such an order would not be implemented.
This article in Politico, Joint Chiefs: 'No modifications' to transgender policy from Trump tweet, goes on to say:
Marine Gen. Joe Dunford also wrote in the message, which was sent to the chiefs of the military branches and senior enlisted leaders, that the military will continue to “treat all of our personnel with respect.”
“I know there are questions about yesterday's announcement on the transgender policy by the President,” Dunford wrote in the internal communication, a copy of which was provided to POLITICO. “There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President's direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance.”
“In the meantime, we will continue to treat all of our personnel with respect. As importantly, given the current fight and the challenges we face, we will all remain focused on accomplishing our assigned missions,” he continued.
When a General disobeys the orders of a President, he has one recourse to retain his authority as President — which is to fire him. This is what Harry Truman did to the most esteemed commander of WWII, Douglas MacAuthur, relieving him of command during the Korean war in 1951. A President is clearly constitutionally the Commander in Chief, and has the plenary authority, in the absence of statute, usually delegated to top level pentagon officials, to define the criteria for those who serve.
This is close to being a military coup, but not to create a dictatorship, rather to defend a mature democracy against an individual who treats this great country as his personal fiefdom.
