I found this story in the local paper, Hawaii Tribune Herald. I’ve always been fascinated by lightning storm and while I’ve video taped lightning strokes, I’ve never attempted to catch a still. I downloaded the time lapse video from the Gemini Observatory Cloud Camera (North) for July 23, 2017. I believe this would be from the post tropical depression that was once Hurricane Fernanda.
The different images were processed using Adobe Photoshop Elements. I believe the 2 stars on the left side of the image are part of the Big Dipper as it is setting.
I think the peak just above the observatory dome is Haleakala on Maui. Not exactly my back yard as just across the island. I’ll have to get my videos converted to DVD. Here is the entire video: www.gemini.edu/…
The sprite takes place around 00:43:23 according to the timer in the lower right clock.
As I viewed the video more, I caught another sprite afterglow with just the upper remnants showing before finding this one.
Guess what, not a full image because my software and skills aren’t so hot and the sprite may have occurred between frames but I did find a probable fourth one.
