In the comments of last week’s diary, which featured drone videos of city skylines, a few folks indicated that they preferred “skylines” of the rural variety. So this week, because I have nothing better to write about (and because I’m sure everybody else needs a break from politics almost as much as I do), I thought I would showcase some of my favorite drone footage of natural and/or small town beauty. In this diary, I’m sticking to the place from which I escaped to the city: rural Pennsylvania. Although I don’t have much desire to move back, the one thing I miss is the sometimes breathtaking scenery. The natural beauty, however, often stands in contrast to the depressed towns that dot the landscape.
I’ll start with my personal favorite video, of Oil City (go Oilers? I’m not from Oil City, but I think that’s what you’re supposed to say). There’s not a whole lot going on in Oil City, but I think it’s one of the most beautiful small Pennsylvania cities. It’s also a well done video.
A YouTube channel called Drone Guys has a number of wonderful videos of this area, including my hometown of Warren:
And the Kinzua Bridge (or, what’s left of it, after a tornado destroyed most of it):
There are surprisingly few drone videos of Pine Creek Gorge (otherwise known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon), but this is a pretty good one:
Finally, if you want some creepy Walking Dead-level shit, here’s a good one featuring the nearly abandoned Centralia, under which there is a coal mine fire that has been burning since 1962. The song is depressingly appropriate, too.
What do you want to kibitz about tonight?
