Received this e-mail today from Democracy for America in support of U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono’s (D. HI) re-election campaign:
During the fight to stop Trumpcare, many elected representatives in the House and the Senate stepped up to show us what courage in the face of tough odds looks like.
But one Senator stood above them all -- and contrary to what you might have heard in the media, it wasn't John McCain.
It was Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii.
This health care fight was personal for Mazie. Just 3 weeks ago, she was diagnosed with stage-four kidney cancer. She knows intimately how critical access to affordable health insurance can be. She has seen up close how every single one of us could be just one diagnosis away from a pre-existing condition.
As the Senate geared up to vote on the so-called "skinny repeal" of the Affordable Care Act -- a bill that would have caused premiums to skyrocket across the country -- Mazie Hirono stood before the chamber and made a heartfelt plea for sanity and mercy:
"Where is your compassion? Where is the care that you showed me when I was diagnosed with my illness? I find it hard to believe that we can sit here and vote on a bill that is going to hurt millions and millions of people in our country.
We are better than that."
Mazie Hirono showed her guts and incredible moral clarity in that moment. Those important traits -- along with her long history of people-focused service -- are why Democracy for America is announcing our endorsement of Sen. Mazie Hirono today.
Can you chip in $3 or more now to help health care hero Mazie Hirono win re-election in 2018 -- and to boost DFA's work to support progressive champions across the country?
Mazie Hirono immigrated to Hawaii with her mother and her brother when she was only eight years old; she struggled to learn English in school while her mom worked two jobs to try to make ends meet. So she has a deep understanding of the challenges faced by working families.
Her experience growing up as an immigrant -- along with the volunteer work she performed in college -- taught her to value the importance of making sure that every single person in Hawaii and in our country has a voice.
Since her election to the House in 2006, Mazie Hirono has been fighting non-stop for working families. And we want to make sure that she has the chance to keep being a progressive rock star in the Senate.
Can you pitch in $3 or more to Mazie Hirono to say "thank you" for her hard work on fighting Trumpcare -- and to support DFA's work to help her win in 2018?
Thanks for helping to reward one of our most courageous voices on health care.
