Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, both white, have a new show concept they have convinced HBO to run with: Confederate, an alternate reality where slavery was never outlawed and continues to this day.
There has been tremendous backlash against the yet-to-air show but the creators and HBO are sticking to their guns and pushing it forward, asking the public at large to trust them — even though they admit they “might fuck it up”.
They say the story will be “nuanced”. Can we get real? Only a group of white people would assert that there is anything nuanced about slavery in America. The idea that you can show a previously enslaved group of your fellow citizens still enslaved in modern America with “nuance” is preposterous.
The hubris of thinking you can do it in a way that doesn’t put your fellow citizens in actual danger is astounding.
The lack of respect it shows for people still fighting against institutional racism to.this.very.day is grotesque.
I can imagine few concepts more offensive and outright dangerous in the current age. As the mother of black sons, I can’t even begin to describe the potential this show has to damage.
Tonight, during Game of Thrones, there is a movement to get the hashtag #NoConfederate trending nationally and perhaps internationally. If you watch the show, be sure to tweet the hashtag while it is on. If you don’t watch the show, tweet anyway.

If anything, responses to this diary have made more more against this project. Black people (and white mothers of black children like me) are speaking out against the damage this show could cause and a whole bunch of supposed progressives are dismissive in the name of “art”.
This does not bode well.
