I had dog booked to stay with me for two weeks while his owner went to Maine; Joey, the most interesting dog in the world. He used to stay at my house a lot when his “mom” played with the Nashville Symphony. She moved to Houston to play with their symphony but was going to drive up and leave him at my house while she went on vacation.
Two weeks ago she found out he has cancer, lymphoma, and only a few months to live, so she’s not leaving him anywhere, he’s going on vacation now too.
She did bring him by the other night though while she went to dinner with some folks. I had a little pool party here for Joey. I invited 6 of his fave dog pals and bought two 20lb bags of ice. I put one in a large size baby pool and filled it with water. I poured the other bag of ice straight on the ground.
Joey doesn’t like to swim, but he sure does like to chew ice. The other dogs were confused by this. They would hop out of the pool and go over to see what Joey was eating. Didn’t smell like food to them and they would walk away sort of shaking their heads, seemingly confused. A few came back time after time and they too started eating ice. They liked it!
There was a lot of splashing and chasing and wrestling and chewing. At the end there were quite a lot of tears from the humans, dogs tend to live more in the moment. Here’s to hoping that all of Joey’s final moments are as fun as the 180 he spent with us.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossack’s nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heat waves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
