According to the Washington Post, Donald Trump personally dictated Donald Trump Jr.’s false statement to the New York Times regarding his meeting with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign.
Advisers initially intended to issue a truthful, if spun, statement to attempt to diffuse the situation, but on the way home from the G20 summit Donald Trump instructed them to change the statement to include false denials that the meeting discussed any information related to the campaign.
These advisers now fear this action may further open Trump up to allegations of obstruction of justice, describing it simply as “unnecessary”.
ABC is now corroborating this story independently.
