Moving at Glacial Speed
I switched KTKs with belinda, not remembering that I have an HOA meeting at 6 tonight. And I’m on the board, ready to exert my new-found influence. So 30 minutes after publishing I will be on a short hiatus, unless I can sneak my laptop in and comment during the meeting.
Sunday was a big day for the move to the condo in that we moved my blogging couch from the farm. Our new abode will be minimalist, by choice and by circumstance; it is very small. I wrote a KTK a few weeks ago about downsizing. We are hoping for a much simpler life, without taking care of 20 acres. But it’s taking a step into uncharted territory, which is why we have chosen to rent the farm initially; we thus have the option to return if the simple life turns out not to be our cup of tea.
So many good things about our condo. Walking distance to 8 restaurants plus any store and service one could wish for. I joked to our visiting family on a tour that all we need is a crematorium and we’d never have to leave. We rented a sweet cottage right next to the pool for my son-in-law and my grandson. Leo was in the pool and hot tub for hours. As we sat next to the pool in lounge chairs watching him I realized….this is the resort I’d always wanted to visit on vacation.
The biggest change, perhaps, will be the views. This is what we see out our front window, able to watch the changes of the seasons plus the deer eating all our landscaping.
Our neighbor’s odd mowing pattern:
The view from my blogging couch will be this nice fireplace. An indication of the glacial speed of our move is the fact that we had a fire going when I took the photo.
One thing that will definitely be different is the social aspect of close neighbors. Here at the farm we lead a rather insular life, only meeting our closest neighbors when we simultaneously take out the garbage. There are 90 condos in our development and that’s a lot of people to meet and perhaps to be petitioned by some as a member of the HOA board.
How often have you moved? Was it by choice or necessity? Do it yourself or hire a mover? Did you enlist your friends? Do you have any friends left after that?
This is an open thread, and please discuss anything your heart’s desire. (Not sure on the punctuation on that).
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
