Update: We reached our goal of $250! Thank you, donors, readers, and members of Daily Kos and the groups named below.
MoveOn members in Detroit voted overwhelmingly for Garlin Gilchrist II, as announced yesterday. Garlin earned a shout-worthy 62% of the vote and clobbered the five other candidates on the ballot for City Clerk, including the incumbent. MoveOn’s 15,000 Detroit members will be asked to support Garlin.
Garlin has the knowledge, heart, experience, and vision to make voting easier and more transparent and to make city government more transparent, responsive, and effective.
November 2016 proved embarrassing for Detroit voters. The popular-vote loser carried Michigan by just 10,000 votes out of 4.8 million votes cast. “The integrity of Detroit’s electoral process, and of the city clerk who oversees it, has ramifications for voters far beyond the city’s borders.” (Detroit Free Press.)
Garlin organized for President Obama in 2008, organized for MoveOn, and organized from within Detroit’s city government. As the Director of Innovation and Emerging Technology, he introduced effective policies for transparency and designed apps for participation in city government, allowing citizens to report and track problems as basic as broken fire hydrants.
