I await the Republican primary Aug 15th to determine who my opponent will be in the special election to replace Jason Chaffetz in Congress. Yesterday, all three men contending for the nomination were throwing verbal insults at each other on a radio debate. Here’s a link to what transpired: www.sltrib.com/… Several conservative national political PACs have gotten involved in boosting their favorite Republican. Tanner Ainge, son of Danny Ainge of Boston Celtics fame, has been endorsed by Sarah Palin. Ted Cruz came to Utah to give an assist to Chris Herrod, who has funded his negative email and social media campaign against the remaining candidate, Mayor John Curtis of Provo via a national conservative PAC. It has all become quite squalid.
While the Republican contenders are failing to discuss substantive issues, our campaign is beginning a series of healthcare town-halls in which policy experts will discuss solutions to America’s healthcare crisis. The first of these will take place tomorrow evening.
In the meantime, a new political party has emerged in Utah politics: The United Utah Party. A law suit was settled last week that allows the Utah United Party to have its candidate on the general election ballot this November. The candidate is Jim Bennett, son of the late Senator Bob Bennett. The party is centrist and is vying for voters who are tired of the extreme left and the extreme right.
I’m writing this diary to let Daily Kos supporters know that this is great news for my chances as the unchallenged Democratic nominee. Even though this new party is billing itself as “moderate,” its association with Senator Bennett’s name is likely to cast it as “Republican-lite.” It may very well divide the Republican vote.
We have formally asked the Daily Kos political team to endorse us and help with our fundraising. We have been overlooked by the DCCC, the DNC, and Swing Left. They don’t seem to have digested the news that a 3-way race changes the equation. Please help us raise 1 million dollars. This is the last House race Special Election for 2017. Let’s take one.
