Let's be crystal clear what is being said when US leaders, including Lindsey Graham, say that we will not accept an ICBM in the hands of North Korea. They are saying that massive casualties among citizens of South Korea and Japan are acceptable to prevent the threat of a nuclear attack against the United States. Expert analysis has estimated the potential casualty count among residents of Seoul, Japan and U.S. service personnel at nearly 1 million.
All of this assumes that the same deterrence which prevented nuclear war with the USSR for 40 years won't work. I see no reason to believe that this is true. All of this heightened tension is mainly the result of a week and belligerent President acting out.
I'll say one thing. All of those who felt that their anger at imagined cultural condescension justified putting an erratic and incompetent clown in the White House wholly own the fallout of this crisis. Let's hope it's not literal fallout.
