I had the great experience of working with Glen in his band in the early 1980’s (when he still worked with 40 piece orchestras). What a lot of hits he had by then!
Despite his personal addiction and relationship issues, he was a first class guy to work with. I was a green-behind-the-ears kid of a musician. When I auditioned I was an impoverished L.A. college student working three jobs and going to school full time. Glen changed all that for me. Started my career in the right direction.
My dad, a humble factory worker, flew out for my first show with Glen at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas (dad’s first jet airliner ride) and silently wept with joy at seeing his boy playing with one of his idols. Glen could not have been nicer to friends and family who came to see me play.
Dad died a month later. A friend told me dad carried around the 3 Glen Campbell records he owned (which was half of his ‘record collection’) and told everyone, very proudly, “my boy is working with Glen Campbell.” I’m so glad he got to see his boy making a go of it in the music business after they sacrificed so many years to pay for music lessons.
