Welcome to bookchat where you can talk about anything...books, plays, essays, and audio books. You don’t have to be reading a book to come in, sit down, and chat with us.
…………….
In 1995 I began reading a fantasy series by Robin Hobb and a few weeks ago, I finished the last book of 16. The ending while sad was also appropriate and wise. It tied everything together. It was a saga with a lot of pain for the main characters. The simple premise of the books is that two people changed the world. No recitation of plot can do justice to the books. They have to be read for their impact to be felt.
………….
To be honest, I am exhausted from reading the final book of 847 pages. It was an emotional ride, especially at the end.
………...
The titles are:
The Farseer Trilogy
Assassin's Apprentice
Royal Assassin
Assassin's Quest
Liveship Traders series
Ship of Magic
Madship
Ship of Destiny
Tawny Man series
Fool’s Errand
Golden Fool
Fool’s Fate
The Rain Wilds Chronicles
Dragon Keeper
Dragon Haven
City of Dragons
Blood of Dragons
Fool’s Assassin
Fool’s Quest
Assassin’s Fate
I love dragon stories, but Hobb’s dragons are not kind dragons or introspective like Temeraire in Naomi Novik's series. (There are nine books in that series.)
…….
I found the stories to be powerful, but I would never insist anyone had to read them. They are just too overwhelming for many readers. I cared about the characters and their fate which kept me reading.
…………
I believe they are best read in order and that is hard to start now when there are 16 books. So I will take up a different topic. What does it feel like to read the last page of an epic story that you have been reading for 23 years?
……………
Many of you have put in a lot of time with the Dorothy Dunnett books and other popular series. In the case of the Dunnett books that I raced through (6 of Lymond and 8 of Niccolo), I started to re-read them the day after I finished them and took notes. I don't have the strength to re-read the Hobb books, yet. Maybe someday.
…………..
There are many other long running series that I like:
………….
I am still enjoying the world of The Foreigner series by Cherryh which has 18 books with at least two more to come.
I read 16 of the Redwall series by Brian Jacques before I gave up and let them go.
I read 12 of the Robert Jordan series (including a prequel) before stopping with the last one he wrote. My son liked the last three written by Sanderson, but I did not read those.
I have read 13 of the Liaden series by Lee and Miller plus three collections of their short stories.
I have read 13 of McCaffrey's Pern series.
I keep mentioning the 11 books of Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet that I read and really enjoyed recently.
It is the same with mysteries. I have enjoyed so many by Alexander McCall Smith, Louise Penny, Tana French, Lee Child, and Daniel Silva. I have stopped with Child and Silva, though. I just got tired.
…………...
If I am lucky, when one author's series ends, I find a new series by other great authors to go ahead with. That helps.
…………….
What series have you turned the last page on and sighed with relief or sadness at being done?
……………..
What series is still continuing that you enjoy?
…………...
The Invisible Library by Cogman will add a book in November called The Lost Plot.
