Check out the photo. This is really big!
Chris Long, a Philadelphia Eagles defensive end and the son of NFL legend Howie long is standing in solidarity with his black NFL bretheren. During a rendition of the national anthem that played before a pre-season football game, Chris Long, who is also a native of Charlottesville, wrapped an arm around teamamate Malcolm Jenkins, who raised his fist in the air as a sign of protest. Chris Long provides his reasoning for joining his NFL brother in protest. Per the New York Times:
“I think it’s a good time for people that look like me to be there for people that are fighting for equality,” Long, who is white, told reporters.
The Civil Rights movement of the 60’s was regarded as “fringe” by mainstream society until more people got involved. More white professional athletes need to stand up and support their black brothers. Their support can help to precipitate real and lasting change.
