People are hurt beyond hurting. At times like this, I find comfort in music. This song just seems right for the moment.
‘What’s Going On’ was released before I was born but it’s a song everybody knows. When it came out in 1971, Marvin Gaye already had a list of hits. Some of his records, like the duets he did with Tammi Terrell, are pop classics. The same goes for his slowed down, brooding version of ‘I Heard it Through the Grapevine.’
Marvin Gaye achieved Motown perfection and then he exceeded it. What he expressed and the way he expressed it 46 years ago still sounds as current and new as now, to me.
