Good day and welcome to DKos Asheville. This is the weekly DKos Asheville Open Thread for Saturday, August 26th.
We offer this space every weekend to share what we're up to in Western North Carolina and beyond.
We hope this group and others serve to invigorate us locally and regionally here on Daily Kos, building on the sense of community that's grown through our online engagement.
DKos Asheville and other local and state groups can give us all a better sense of connection, a better understanding of who we stand with, work with and share with. We hope this local and wider community can help leverage our orange passion for progressive politics to move the county forward.
Following is the Daily Kos Mission Statement and we are proud to be part of this movement, on the keyboards and on the ground.
Daily Kos fights for a progressive America by empowering its community and allies with information and tools to directly impact the political process.
Just 25 miles south of downtown Asheville is one of the country's top apple growing areas - and you can visit the orchards and farms for free! North Carolina is the 7th largest apple-producing state in the nation, and Henderson County is the largest apple-producing county in North Carolina, growing 65% of them. You can visit many orchards along US Highway 64 (we call it "Apple Alley"), just a few miles east of I-26 (between Hendersonville and Chimney Rock). The apple harvest season runs from late August to late October, and many of the orchards are open daily. Several of the orchards offer tours and many allow you to pick your own apples - and pick up pumpkins and other farm harvest.
Locally grown fruits and vegetables are fresher and cost less than you find in a traditional grocery store. Fresh NC Apples are the freshest and tastiest apples you can buy. Here are three orchards near Hendersonville that are within a few miles of each other.
Thanks for stopping by, have a great weekend!
