In a speech at the MTV Music Awards, Robert Lee IV, a descendant of Civil War General Robert E. Lee, gave an impassioned speech saying, ‘We have made my ancestor an idol of white supremacy, racism and hate. As a pastor, it is my moral duty to speak out against racism, America’s original sin. Today, I call on all of us with privilege and power to answer God’s call to confront racism and white supremacy head-on.’
Lee then introduced Susan Bro, the mother of Heather Heyer, the woman who was killed in Charlottesville when James Fields Jr. drove his car at high speed into a crowd of counter protesters. In an emotional moment, Bro announced the formation of Heather Heyer Foundation, which will be focused on funding scholarships and fighting hatred.
