Not snark.
I watched Governor Scott this morning asking for more volunteers on national TV. He has been asking for well over a week for more nurses, for people to help in the shelters, and for people to help recover and rebuild. You would think that there might be a federal agency responsible for providing such assistance...but, as has been pointed out elsewhere, FEMA is running out of money.
So the other swirling windbag gets on the teevee this morning and talks about how horrible Irma is and how the government is closely monitoring the situation and will do everything they can to help, and uses all of this as more evidence that we need tax reform.
"I think now, with what's happened with the hurricane, I'm gonna ask for a speed up," he said. "I wanted a speed up anyway, but now we need it even more so. So we need to simplify the tax code, reduce taxes very substantially on the middle class, and make our business tax more globally competitive. We're the highest anywhere in the world right now."
Let’s just ignore the fact that he keeps repeating the old “we have the highest taxes in the world” misleading statement...I’m...really...having a hard time following his “logic.” Which is nothing new. But this was a pre-recorded video message, not just some spontaneous verbal diarrhea that we see from him at rallies. This is 100% intentional. The hurricane is horrible, so we need to cut taxes on the top 0.1% and oh yeah also throw a few hundred bucks at the middle class to make them think the cuts were for them haha. You reckon he is worried about the loss of revenue if Mar-a-Lago doesn’t reopen for a few weeks?
Bottom line, rushing through tax reform isn’t going to do much good for 99.9% of people affected by Harvey or Irma (or the wildfires or anything else). I’m sure he knows that. I’m sure he’s hoping that everybody who cares doesn’t notice because they are too busy ACTUALLY HELPING.
