A recent Boston Globe tally found that Donald Trump has been sued “nearly three times more than his three most recent predecessors combined”—and lawsuits concerning his cowardly decision to end DACA are among those quickly piling up as San Jose, California joins in taking legal action to protect immigrant youth:
“We’re always interested in a legislative solution but we’re going to court to protect individual rights and the courts are there for a reason,” said San Jose City Attorney Rick Doyle.
Mayor Sam Liccardo said San Jose, believed to be the first U.S. city beyond the District of Columbia to file suit over DACA, would be heavily affected if the program were to end.
“DACA recipients include public servants in our own City Hall, providing public safety and other critical services to our community,” Liccardo said at a news conference Thursday morning at the Robert F. Peckham Federal Building. “They all deserve our support and they deserve our nation’s welcome.”
San Jose joins 20 states, Washington, D.C., the University of California system, and Dreamer Martín Batalla Vidal in suing. California is home to some 200,000 DACA recipients, the largest population in the nation. “At least 23,000 Dreamers live in Santa Clara County,” notes CBS SF Bay Area, “with many residing in the county’s largest city, San Jose.”
“The city’s own workforce is harmed by this rescission, imperiling the ability of these city employees to lawfully continue to serve our community in critical functions,” Mayor Liccardo said. “Our city residents directly suffer because they lose critical services at a time when we are already stretched thin with hundreds of vacancies at City Hall … if we’re going to protect our Dreamers, we need to take action.”
