On September 15, I wrote a detailed diary about the process for protecting yourself in response to the Equifax data breach, based on research and my experiences. As part of protecting myself, I ordered a free credit report from TransUnion.
Today, I received an email from TransUnion announcing “You’re In!”, with a big blue button to receive my credit report as the “next step”, above a broad bar, which indicated that the key information in the email was finished.
Being a bit of a skeptic, I scrolled beneath the bar to the small print. The small print indicated that TransUnion is offering credit monitoring for $19.95 a month, plus tax.
I also found a phone number for customer service, which I called, to make sure that I was NOT enrolled. After some push back, I determined that I am not enrolled, but if I had clicked on the button, I would have been starting the process.
I also clicked on the “legal” tab, and found out that TransUnion still has the arbitration and “no class action” clauses.
So beware! The credit companies are ready to make big money off of people’s fears and trust.
Just sayin’.
