I took a class at a workshop hosted by our guild and taught by Peggy Martin. Peggy was a great teacher and taught quick paper piecing. She has written a few books, all of which I want now. I made the pointy star medallion that is the center of this little 36” square quilt in her class.
The star was very easy to make, using her papers. We cut strips instead of the standard method of guessing what size scrap will fit the space when sewn and ironed over. I was quite pleased with this block, which is large, but I had nothing left to make another. I thought about making others, in other colors, and putting them together with sashing, but another path offered itself.
My guild arranged a bus trip to the Glendale Quilt Guild show in Pasadena last Friday. A ton of us loaded up on the bus and were delivered to the front door, no traffic or parking problems. The show was wonderful. I was restrained in my spending but did buy some fabric and saw demonstrations of what appeared to me to be magical tools. I wanted them all, of course, and if I was willing to spend all of my kid’s inheritance, could have had them all but I would have had to get rid of most of my furniture at home. But on the way out, I saw a little posted notice for Project Linus. Being a woman of signs and omens, I knew I had found the home for this star block.
Project Linus gives new handmade security blankets to critically ill and traumatized children. They accept quilts from 36” square up to twin size, as well as donations for supplies and money. This star block was perfect for a 36” square quilt and I was able to make it in 3 days. I quilted it on my domestic machine and the back is flannel to make it snuggly.
Their contact is www.handmadehugs.org if you are interested. They may have a chapter in your area. Ok, that’s my good deed for the week!
