Tonight, Democrats picked up two more exciting special election wins in districts that voted Republican last November. Kossack Carolyn Fiddler wrote a great post about it already — www.dailykos.com/…
Tonight’s election winners, Kari Lerner and Annette Taddeo are among the deserving candidates that ‘Postcards to Voters’ has recently written thousands of GOTV postcards for.
Kari Lerner won her election by a narrow 39 vote margin in an election where 1,763 ballots were cast. The result was in a local newspaper.
Annette Taddeo won by 1,370 votes in an election where about 43,000 ballots were cast, according to a Politico article.
These are very exciting wins that are hinting at big changes in the midterm elections. But they aren’t happening by themselves. Both these candidates had a large and enthusiastic ground game which played a large part.
But another thing they had is the group ‘Postcards to Voters’ organizing a postcard writing campaign that reached thousands of Democratic voters in their districts (more like hundreds in Kari Lerner’s less populated district).
Now, I’m not saying definitively that ‘Postcards to Voters’ was a big part of putting these two candidates into office. But I’m not saying that it isn’t a big part either. Kari Lerner won by 39 votes in an election where volunteers wrote reminder postcards to hundreds of Democrats in her district. These volunteers donated the stamps and postcards. It cost her nothing! And she was able to work with ‘Postcards to Voters’ to craft the message that she wanted written on those hundreds of reminder postcards that her potential voters would read right before the election.
Feedback from postcard recipients in recent elections is overwhelmingly positive. It appears that people like getting homemade, hand written postcards with friendly reminders to vote, written by committed volunteers from other parts of the country; at least that’s what the people receiving the postcards are reporting. And they also report that they are much more likely to actually read a handwritten postcard than slick campaign mailer. The latter are immediate recycling fodder to many voters.
It’s a great program, and I’m excited to be involved!
The one limiting factor that determines how many deserving Democratic candidates the group can support is volunteers! ‘Postcards to Voters’ needs more volunteers so that they can reach the sheer volume of postcards that is vital to helping all the candidates that have asked for the group’s volunteer services.
All you have to do is email Join@TonyTheDemocrat.org and ask for five address to begin. You will get five addresses emailed to you, along with instructions on what to write on the postcards. When you get the postcards written, take a picture of them and send the picture to ‘Postcards to Voters’. How you do that will be in the instructions in your initial email. Once you have sent the picture, you’ll be able to ask for any number of postcards that you want, and you won’t have to send pictures to verify that they were written anymore.
It’s a great way to help deserving Democratic candidates win in elections all over the country without leaving your house.
Again, just email Join@TonyTheDemocrat.org
Thank you all for everything you’re doing to help turn our country blue!
