After the failed experiment that’s occupied the White House over the past several months, you would have thought that the establishment of the Republican Party would have learned its lessons about nominating and promoting grossly incompetent individuals with little-to-no experience for higher level offices. Apparently not; well, at least not here in the Saratoga Springs and Washington County regions of Upstate New York where a Republican candidate running for the New York State Assembly that ought to be marginalized into absolute obscurity based on their poor credentials and lack of any work experience is instead being promoted by local media outlets, several area Republican officials and even a handful of business owners, causing them to garner far more grassroots support than a challenger would typically have more than a year before the election.
The very flawed Republican candidate is twenty year old aspiring career politician Morgan Zegers, a right-wing activist and Trump supporter who is currently being mentored and groomed by area Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R), for what she hopes will become a lengthy career in GOP politics. At the present time, Zegers is only a part-time resident of the district, attending American University hundreds of miles away in Washington D.C.; she occasionally travels back to her parents’ home in Malta, outside of Saratoga Springs, over breaks and holidays to campaign for election.
Prior to Zegers’s candidacy, over the past several decades, almost all candidates of both major political parties that sought election to the state legislature from our region typically were accomplished professionals that had proved their competence as public servants through many years of experience serving the taxpayers in either county or municipal elected positions. Even though some in the district continue to urge Zegers to seek a lower-level office, such as Town Board or School Board, to gain some valuable knowledge and experience about how government actually works, Clueless Morgan who has never really held any public or private sector job of any substance, defiantly refuses to accept anything less than running for a political office that has a base salary of around $80,000 annually (and typically runs over $100,000 annually when including stipends for committee assignments), an amount that even many professionals in this part of Upstate New York will never earn throughout their entire career spans.
Clueless Morgan really needs a reality check.
The absolute absurdity of Zegers’s campaign goes even further. Similar to her fellow Republican colleague Donald Trump, this young intellectual lightweight is basically nothing but a snake oil saleswoman con-artist with an empty resume selling nothing but hot air to her cult-like group of supporters. Clueless Morgan is constantly out on social media complaining about high property taxes when she’s never owned any property or paid any taxes. Clueless Morgan loves to tout her “expertise” at growing the Upstate New York economy when she essentially hasn’t contributed anything to the Upstate New York economy. Clueless Morgan goes on about her ability to reform government when she’s never been elected to any government office. Clueless Morgan, who probably has never contributed a cent towards her own health care, now loves to lecture middle-aged and older adults about what she would do to their health care. Clueless Morgan endlessly touts her slogan about ushering in “a new generation of leadership” when she’s never even been placed in any position of authority or proven that she can lead anything. Clueless Morgan is an “adamant opponent” of raising the minimum wage when she has never had to struggle to earn a living for herself in the real world or ever watched as her own tax dollars get flushed away every year subsidizing major fast food and big box retail giants whose workers often apply for government benefits because they can’t earn a livable wage in those jobs.
And one honestly has to ask themselves; why is the New York State Republican Committee lending any veneer of credibility to a pompous and arrogant self-promoting college girl that doesn’t even have the slightest clue as to what she’s talking about? The fact that top GOP elected officials in our region, including Congresswoman Stefanik, would even suggest placing an immature kid only two years out of high school who’s never even held a real job in a position of this level of authority just seems mind-blowingly absurd and insane. And if Morgan Zegers really wants to prove herself to be the community-minded and civic-oriented individual that she claims to be, then why isn’t she spending all these hundreds of hours volunteering towards various charities in our area, rather than running a useless, narcissistic vanity campaign that really doesn’t benefit anyone except herself?
The tumultuous and chaotic era of Donald Trump has proved now more than ever that we need competent candidates with strong leadership abilities that are veterans of the political system and have the maturity to garner the respect of their colleagues. We already have a caring and dedicated public servant with these characteristics in incumbent State Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner (D-Round Lake), who has over three decades of real-world experience working in the private sector in technology business ventures, including stints at IBM and Perot Systems. Woerner, who has legislated as a pragmatic pro-business centrist, has earned a wide array of mainstream support, ranging from progressive labor unions, such as AFL-CIO and NYSUT, to conservative business groups, including The Business Council of New York State. While Woerner continues to remain the strong favorite for re-election in the 113th District, as many of us painfully learned from Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, we can never take anything for granted, especially in this predominantly Republican region of Upstate New York that favored Donald Trump last year. Woerner, who was first elected in 2014, became the first Democrat in over a century to represent this area in the State Assembly; prior to Woerner, the last Democrat to represent the Saratoga Springs area was undertaker William Martin (D-Saratoga Springs) in 1912, while the remaining balance of the district hadn’t been represented by a Democrat since lumber businessman Orson Sheldon (D-Washington County) served in 1888; both men were one-term flukes.
The Republican Party has already done enough to make a mockery out of the office of the Presidency; let’s not let them make a mockery out of our state and local politics as well.
