Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
From time to time, people from different groups at Daily Kos have come together to make gifts for veterans who are hospitalized. So far, we have given gifts of quilts, handmade hats and scarves, teddy bears, and books and games to veterans in the VA Hospitals in Palo Alto, CA, Detroit, MI, and Portland, OR. You can click here for galleries of photos of those gifts. After a hiatus last year, we are back at it — and this time are planning a gift for the VA Hospital in Salem, VA — the hospital at which Kossack Gordon20024 gets his care. The time frame is late March 2018. Gordon20024 will be making the delivery with help from friends in the Ashville, NC group.
Anyone can join in! I will be writing a diary soon about the quilts (and we have five in hand that will go to Gordon20024, made last year by Pam from Calif, BeadLady, and maggiejean). If you quilt, knit, or crochet, consider being a part of this! Quilts are used in the hospital wards, by veterans in wheelchairs, and also in hospice. Hats and scarves are used in the hospital’s homeless outreach and the hats are also prized in the cancer wards. Books and games — well, their use goes without saying! And the teddy bears that joanbrooker has so kindly donated help connect hospitalized veterans with the younger generation of family members.
Remember, too, that you can take a tax deduction for any gift you make. Just let Gordon20024 or me know and we will make sure the hospital gives you a letter acknowledging your gift. Money gifts are appreciated, too. VA hospitals use money gifts to buy all sorts of things that the patients might need.
Let me know in the comments if you would like to participate. All ideas are welcome!
The weekend is beginning now...tell us about your day, your plans, your menus! This is an open thread.
