I’m working hard to elect Garlin Gilchrist as Detroit City Clerk because my current city clerk has messed up too many elections. The citizens of Detroit will regain their power once their votes are reliably counted and they are encouraged to participate in the life of the city through Garlin's steps to make Detroit government more transparent. We have 31 days until the election!
Electing Garlin can help us secure wins for Democrats in Michigan, and, if you recall the popular-vote loser's margin of victory in Michigan (11,000 votes), by electing Garlin, we can help take back our country. Please see my introductory story and/or Garlin's campaign website.
Let’s make a difference for Black lives
Electing Garlin and others like him will make a difference for Eddie Russell, others like him, and their families.
Eddie Russell was a mentally challenged 25-year-old man who was shot by Peoria police 18 times, once in the back of the head, and left on the ground for hours. He was the cousin of hip-hop queen T-Boz.
Special note to white-splainers: Please do NOT argue the specifics of this killing by Peoria police, I am not an expert, I do not know all the details, the legal processes have not reached their conclusions. Please do NOT argue that a pattern of police killings of black men does not exist, or tell me that he was suspicious because this or that. I am in no mood for that.
Back to the election: 31 days left!
Only 30 days left to impact this important Detroit election. Absentee ballots have been mailed out already, so absentee voters will be starting to lock in their votes. As I mentioned previously at Daily Kos stories, the incumbent slipped below 50% in polling shortly after the primary.
Please inform all the Detroiter voters you know that we need to elect a new city clerk. With your help, Detroit’s next city clerk will be Garlin Gilchrist, who is proficient in community organizing, social media, and technologies.
As I reported in my most recent Daily Kos story about this election, the incumbent clerk sent out duplicate applications for absentee ballots. In a normal year, about one third of absentee voters should have voted by this point in the cycle, but this year only about one sixth of absentee voters have voted. I blame the current clerk for confusing and disenfranchising voters.
Date of the Election
November 7, 2017.
