Xenophobia is one of the defining pillars of the Trump Administration—and most Americans do not support it. Unfortunately, Ralph Northam, Virginia’s Democratic candidate for governor, supports attacks on sanctuary cities. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports:
Democratic gubernatorial nominee Ralph Northam said Wednesday that he would sign a bill to ban so-called sanctuary cities if a Virginia locality tries to become one in the future.
Republican nominee Ed Gillespie has pushed the issue of sanctuary cities to the forefront of the governor’s race. The term is loosely defined but generally understood as a locality that will not cooperate with federal immigration authorities. No Virginia city or county has tried to adopt policies to impede such cooperation.
Sanctuary cities aren’t a real issue in Virginia; they don’t even exist in the state! Why should Northam even say this? Perhaps to cater to the white and racist voters who’d care? Why does he care about their vote when being anti-sanctuary city is markedly a prominent part of the Trump administration?
Racist Keebler Elf Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ Department of Justice tried to punish cities who dare to make a stand (even if it’s symbolic) against unfair anti-immigrant measures. He wanted to block public safety funds for sanctuary cities. Fortunately, he’s been unsuccessful.
That didn’t stop Northam from insisting he’d sign a bill banning sanctuary cities into law.
But in an interview Wednesday with the Norfolk TV station WAVY, Northam said for the first time that, under certain circumstances, he would sign a bill similar to the one he voted against this year, a vote that spawned a wave of ominous ads from the Gillespie campaign linking Northam to the Latino gang MS-13.
“If that bill comes to by desk ... I sure will. I’ve always been opposed to sanctuary cities. He knows that,” Northam said of Gillespie, whose MS-13-themed ads have been blasted by critics as racially tinged.
Sucks to see Northam succumb to racist pressure by aligning with his conservative opponent. People notice when politicians throw people of color under the bus by falling for the GOP’s racist rhetoric.
And Democrats wonder why they’re losing their most loyal voters: Black women.
