Trump’s Mar-a-Lago has been given 70 H-B2 visas to hire temporary foreign hospitality staff for the 2017/18 winter season. They will be paid from $10.33 (for cleaners) to $13.34 (for cooks). Trump says he loves the American worker — but it’s just another lie.
When questioned during the 2016 campaign about his hiring of foreign workers, Trump claimed that there were no American workers to take the jobs. However, CareerSource Palm Beach County, a nonprofit job placement agency, says it knows plenty of American citizens willing to work at Mar-a-Lago.
"We currently have 5,136 qualified candidates in Palm Beach County for various hospitality positions listed in the Employ Florida state jobs database," CareerSource spokesman Tom Veenstra said Friday.
And the Trump organization makes little effort to recruit Americans. Employers are required to run two ads. This is how the Washington Post reported those efforts.
The club placed an ad on page C8 of the Palm Beach Post, crammed full of tiny print laying out the job experience requirements in classified ad shorthand. “3 mos recent & verifiable exp in fine dining/country club,” the ad said. “No tips.”
The ad gave no email address or phone number. “Apply by fax,” it said. The ad also provided a mailing address. It ran twice, then never again.
Pathetic.
And adding to the insult, Trump’s request to hire foreign workers came during Trump’s “Made in America Week”.
Trump makes hay beating up American companies for offshoring jobs. But he is the first to throw the American worker under the bus.
I suspect that there is an unmentioned advantage to hiring foreigners. They are far less likely to complain — or sue.
It’s easy to rail against ‘illegal aliens’ when you make them temporarily legal when you need them.
And let me ask this: If Trump’s taxes are cut will he pay his workers more?
Simply put, Trump treats the American worker the way Harvey Weinstein treats actresses.
