From late August until early June, California Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus) spend time hanging out and barking in the Newport, Oregon, Bayfront area. Male sea lions can grow up to eight feet long and weigh up to 1,000 pounds. Females, on the other hand, grow up to six feet long and weight up to 250 pounds. An adult sea lion will eat 5-8% of its body weight daily. Their diet includes fish, squid, and octopus.
All marine mammals, including sea lions, are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. In studying these mammals, researchers have marked some of them with numbers. This helps in tracking their migration patterns.
