Last night Doug Jones held a rally at North Alabama University in Huntsville, Alabama. He had a pretty big crowd at Charger Union on the campus at UAH. Charger Union holds 332 people, the place was nearly full. Outreach to college age voters is essential in getting Doug Jones over the finish line. He was invited by the UAH College Democrats. From WHNT:
Dakota Layton, the president of the UAH College Democrats, urged people beforehand to come hear him out.
"I think that if you're politically interested, and if you're interested in both sides, and not just your party, you should come out and see what he's all about. I think that a lot of the race has turned away from issues and more into partisan hacking: 'I'm going to attack him because he's not part of my party.' I think that you should come out and see what he's all about."
Those who did attend heard from an energized Jones about what he believes. He spoke about his past as a U.S. Attorney, and about his stance on "kitchen-table issues."
Doug Jones stood up in front of an openly invited crowd of students to explain his platform on the issues. Not about himself, but what he could do to help Alabamians. More from WHNT:
He talked about public education affordability, which resonated with sophomore, Reid Goram.
"I myself need a Pell grant. I've been given one," he explained. "I don't want other people who are in the same position as I am, who can't afford to outright pay for school, to not be able to get a Pell grant to come to school."
Goram said he came to the rally to learn more about Jones, to whom he had been leaning in this U.S. Senate race. But he left with a decision made: to vote for Jones.
"This has cemented the vote," he said. "I got to hear more about his policies, his ideas, see his passion for it. Definitely know that he's not someone who is here for a Senate job. Very comforting to hear someone who wants to discuss both sides of politics, not just fight for one side, and who wants to push forward issues," said Goram.
After the rally, Doug went to check out his new Huntsville office where volunteers for the Doug Jones campaign were phone banking. Doug even did a few calls himself.
Doug has a diverse staff, they are of many races, ages, and religions. He is an inclusive person with real honest to goodness values we all should share.
While Doug was holding an open rally for college students, alumni, the public, his opponent was scuttling about to enter the back of a tiny church in Dora, Alabama. The church holds about 100 people, it wasn’t even half full. And a quarter of the crowd were media. His opponent took no questions, rushed out after about 20 minutes of RWNJ attacks on LGBT, Washington, the media, etc. Something about not hating the sinner, but hating the sin.
I just don’t think hating on anything really is much of a winning campaign slogan.
Don’t be fooled by the narrative that Alabama voters are too stupid, or backward to vote for a democrat. Yes, there are some backwoods, backwards, ignorant racist haters out there. One of them just happens to be running against Doug Jones for this all important senate seat. The light is shining bright on Alabama. The time is now, the place is Alabama, the date is December 12th, 2017. If you live in Alabama, are 18, registered to vote, be there and vote for Doug Jones. Bring it home people.
