Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
My Congressman makes fruitcake. Really, really good fruitcake. And he is using his famous fruitcake as a force for good. Even if you think all fruitcake is evil, you will agree that his fruitcake philanthropy is awesome.
All this month, sales of Salt & Straw’s Congressman Blumenauer’s Fruitcake flavor ice cream will benefit the Community Cycling Center, to provide low income Portland youth with bicycles this holiday season. And last month, Voodoo Doughnut featured a Congressman Blumenauer Fruitcake Fritter to benefit p:ear, “an organization that mentors homeless and transitional youth in Portland” (according to the Congressman’s email about his fruitcake). Pretty cool, no?
I miss fruitcake, myself. Since giving up gluten, I have not had any. But I used to really enjoy it. My mom would give fruitcakes from the Collin Street Bakery every year. What did she keep her buttons in? A fruitcake tin, of course. Memories of Christmas past all feature fruitcake.
