They aren’t from Mars or Venus
They aren’t from outer space or some kingdom under the sea.
Donald Trump, the most corrupt and incompetent president in history, and his clown car full of Republican enablers and surrogates are not some strange mysterious invading force we’re dealing with in this country. OK, maybe strange is appropriate.
As we’re overwhelmed by the day-to-day stupidity and corruption of Trump, his White House and his GOP enablers it’s easy to think we have no choice but to batten down the hatches and hope the storm doesn’t wash all of us into a dark hole in history.
The dangers are very real – from the threat of nuclear war to the destruction of the poor and middle classes to division caused by class, race and culture wars all started by this president and his administration.
But while Trump and his gang are doing their shtick right now, we have the ultimate long hook to yank them off the world stage to a cascade of boos. It’s called our vote.
In 2016 we had enough people – not a majority but enough –who for whatever reasons voted for Trump. They apparently ignored or didn’t bother to educate themselves enough to learn he had no business being president of our country, no matter what they thought of the other candidate.
In 2018 we can start by taking back one or both houses of Congress. That’ll not only limit Trump’s chances to do damage but will help put the brakes on the Republicans’ pro-rich, anti-poor-and-middle-class agenda.
The next step will be 2020 when we gain or retain control of both houses and defeat Trump or whoever the Republican presidential nominee happens to be.
I know this blog has seemed like a broken record sometimes talking about 2018 and 2020, but the simple fact is that’s how we stop this very real threat to our democracy and the rule of law. I’m pulling for Special Counsel Robert Mueller to throw the book at Trump, but even if he does the chance of this congress impeaching him is virtually non-existent.
So, we have to pick out our targets. In my state, Pennsylvania, for example my U.S. representative is Mike Kelly, a Trump puppet who’s got to go. Our one Democratic senator, Bob Casey, is up for re-election. I don’t know whether he’ll receive a challenge from the party’s Left.
Our governor is Democrat Tom Wolfe and he’s vital in trying to hold off our state’s Republican-controlled House and Senate. Naturally all the state and local level races are critical.
Every race is important. You literally have to focus on them individually and do as much as you can to help, even if it’s just putting up a sign or making a donation.
It’s been said here before that there could be a blue wave coming, but it’s not coming on its own.
It’s not coming without enough grass-root support. And it’s not coming if the national and state Democrat parties don’t up their games. Still, I think it’s coming.
And it’s going to blow the tent right off this three-ring mess we’re in now.
