Republicans are trying to taint the legitimacy of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation by focusing on negative text messages about Donald Trump sent during the election campaign by two FBI agents who later worked on Mueller’s team. In other words, Republicans are really reaching, but as usual, they’re putting in the work to turn a reach into a frenzy. The FBI’s Peter Strzok and Lisa Page exchanged messages like these:
Responding to a Washington Post story about Trump saying it hadn’t been proven that Russian President Vladimir Putin had killed anyone, Page wrote: "What an utter idiot."
In a March 2016 message, Page exclaimed: "God trump is a loathsome human....omg he's an idiot."
"He's awful," replied Strzok.
Oooh, strong words. Almost as strong as Trump’s secretary of state calling him a “f*cking moron.” And just about even with Trump’s national security adviser reportedly calling him an “idiot” (that word again!) and a “dope.”
So that’s what Republicans have. Two FBI agents exchanging personal texts before the election calling Trump things somewhat short of the worst his own top advisers have had to say about him, and being removed from Mueller’s investigation when their comments came to light.
