According to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s office, a bipartisan group of senators have reached an agreement on a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) fix and other immigration issues:
President Trump called on Congress to solve the DACA challenge. We have been working for four months and have reached an agreement in principle that addresses border security, the diversity visa lottery, chain migration/family reunification, and the Dream Act—the areas outlined by the President. We are now working to build support for that deal in Congress.
But as The Daily Beast reports, the White House “has yet to sign on”:
The deal, which is largely being forged in the Senate, still faces major hurdles; chief among them a healthy skepticism by conservatives—including some officials in the White House—and a difficult path to passage in the House. But one lawmaker told The Daily Beast that there was a “growing sense of optimism” that negotiators had crafted an agreement that could, at a minimum, pass the Senate and put pressure on the House to act.
And, hurdles from aides like Stephen Miller and legislators like Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Tom Cotton (R-AR) , whose sole contributions are poison pills to derail the DREAM Act. So, as it stands, everything seems to remain as up in the air as it did yesterday.
