So, the original plan for this diary was to find songs that have “shutdown” in their titles. But, as it turns out, about the only qualifying song I could find that also had Daily Kos-appropriate lyrics is by the Beach Boys:
What I found along the way, though, is that there are a number of pretty good amateur songs about real government shutdowns on YouTube, many of which don’t have very many views. This was a rabbit hole I’m really glad I went down. Here are a few of my favorites, starting with a parody of John Mellencamp’s “Small Town” (one of my favorite songs, I’m not ashamed to say).
Some others below...the lyrics are dated (from 2011 and 2013), but the repeated theme that is still relevant today is Republican hostage-taking.

Hopefully, if nothing else, we’ll get some more original music out of this government shutdown that we can enjoy the next time around.
