Good evening, Kibitzers! So, apparently I broke my wrist about ten days ago, by falling on ice. I took the position at the time that it was sprained, because I could move it and because if I went to the ER I'd come back with the flu; also because there was no way I could drive, I wasn't calling an ambulance for my wrist, and I didn't want my neighbor to also get the flu. So I was icing it and using Epsom salts and so on, but it wasn't acting like a sprain. I was treating inflammation, but no inflammation was in evidence to begin with. It never swelled or looked bruised. It just hurt. Monday was the first day my orthopedist was back from vacation, so I got myself down there. It's just a wee little bit broken. Now I have a soft cast and a note that says I cannot drive to Connecticut for a month. Overall, I might have come out ahead, in spite of a little pain and inconvenience.
The “State of the Uniom” speech begins at 9 pm Eastern, so if you are of a mind to watch it, you are forgiven for not sticking around here. If you think of it, drop a comment in here when the Orange Hindenburg runs out of lies for the evening, so I can turn on the TV and see the Democratic response. If, however, you also are inclined to avoid it, come on in and watch something more pleasant.
We have to start with this masterful and cheering performance by Kate McKinnon.
Here’s the final Obama “In Performance at the White House”, on the theme “Love and Happiness”. (1:21:32)
That ought to cover it, but just for my dear side pocket, here’s a live Dire Straits performance I love. (16:16)
Late addition:
PUERTO RICO and USVI DISASTER RELIEF DONATION LINKS
We read today that FEMA plans to shut off food and water aid to Puerto Rico starting TOMORROW, because everything is all better as far as they’re concerned. We know that’s not even close to true, so although I’ve been putting this box here for quite a while, it’s not time to take it away yet.
PLEASE FOLLOW Denise Oliver Velez and the SOS Puerto Rico group for the latest news about developments in Puerto Rico and the USVI.

Also (no money required here): our friend, the ultra-talented Crashing Vor, is about to have his pocket picked by Google, owners of YouTube, who have apparently forgotten about their motto, “Don’t be evil.” He has just over two weeks to get his Youtube channel up to 4,000 hours of viewing in the past year, or they will take away his ability to carry ads. The ads bring in very little money directly, but you may not be surprised to hear that channels carrying ads are prioritized in searches, and searches bring him new listeners/customers.
If you haven’t heard his excellent music and brilliant political ads, do yourself a favor and go to his channel and watch some. If you’re keen to help him out, I will share that I’ve been opening his video page every day, clicking “PLAY ALL”, and then clicking the LOOP symbol on the right. (It briefly shows a “Loop is on” message in the lower left of the screen.) Then I mute the sound so I can work or sleep, and let it play all day and night. Eventually it crashes the browser tab and has to be restarted, but it’s usually good for over 24 hours at a time.
If anyone would care to join me in this, please do. There are not enough hours left for me to get him over the line by myself, but a group of people could do it. Pro tip: it looks as if, if you leave the sound on, YouTube puts up longer and longer ads if you don’t hurry over there and skip the ads when possible. If you mute the video’s sound, apparently YouTube knows that and doesn’t bother to show many ads, thus not cutting into the time CV’s videos are playing. No, I have no idea what they’re thinking.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well. |
