The State of the Union address last night was filled with everything we have come to expect from this current government: racism, fear, threat of war, lies about the economy, lies about immigration, more racism, more fear, and this special line about how awesome the GOP trillion dollar-plus tax breaks for the rich:
Since we passed tax cuts, roughly 3 million workers have already gotten tax cut bonuses — many of them thousands and thousands of dollars per worker. And it’s getting more every month, every week.
Sounds amazing. It’s 1 percent of our population and the numbers come from a conservative think tank and even USA Today has to admit that while the number is likely around 2.5 million, there’s really zero chance of knowing how many of those millions wouldn’t have been given a bonus regardless of whether or not Trump, Clinton, or Bugs Bunny had been in office.
Moody's Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi cautioned that there's "no way to know if they would have gotten them if there were no tax cuts. And they probably would have given how hard it is for businesses to fill open job positions and hold on to their existing workforce."
A poll that came out Monday ahead of the SOTU speech explained that around 2 percent of working adults believed they had received a bonus connected to the GOP tax breaks.
About 58 percent of U.S. adults surveyed said that large U.S. corporations or wealthy Americans stand to benefit most from the tax legislation. Just 13 percent said the middle class will benefit the most, the poll showed.
[...]
But views of the law's impact were decidedly mixed: 24 percent of respondents in the poll said they expected to pay less tax under the new law; 27 percent said they expected to pay more; 23 percent said they expected no change.
That’s because most of the tax breaks will go to the rich and everyone knows that; most everyone is not rich. But listen, if you haven’t received your awesome check from the Republican tax break yet, don’t worry as Trump’s speechwriter was sure to put in all caps and bold in the State of the Union teleprompter:
--and millions of Americans will have more take-home pay starting next month.
Just keep waiting guys. If it doesn’t come next month, it’ll come the following month, and if not then definitely after November 6, 2018. Don’t make any rash decisions on these tax cuts until then. That trickle-down you’re feeling right now might smell like urine, but the Republican Party is banking on you having forgotten what real money smells like.
