This week’s diary will be a little light on the subject matter, that said, let’s get started!
This week we stopped into a nearby winery and tasted their wines. We left with two bottles of their white Merlot. We’ve never had a white Merlot, and this one was delicious, and seemed to be a good reminder of a wine you’d drink in summer.
The tasting reminded me that by removing the accent of the gal pouring our wine, it was the same experience we’ve had in Oregon, Washington, and California. Sitting in the sun, looking across the vineyards to some beautiful hills. We’ve had lots of wonderful memories doing that, with family, and, good friends.
I was then reminded of the diary I wrote last week about Oregon’s exports. Wine is certainly part of that. In 2016, almost 2 million cases of Oregon wine were sold outside of the state. industry.oregonwine.org/...
Internationally, Canada is the largest recipient of foreign wine exports from Oregon, responsible for 41% of foreign exports, with nearly 27,000 cases of wine. The UK was next with nearly 7000 cases of Oregon wine. www.wineindustryadvisor.com/…
This bit of info about “direct to consumer” sales, stands out for me in this article from The Oregonian:
Oregon led the surge with a 31 percent jump over 2016, followed by Washington state with 26 percent and Sonoma County with a 25 percent increase. The rise came despite the effect of October's fires, which depressed direct-to-consumer sales by $20 million in Napa County alone, the report estimated.
To sum up, wine is a big business on the West Coast; AKA, the best coast!
We have not seen any US wines in Spain, not even sure if I’ve seen any from Portugal. A couple from France, but that might have just been champagne. Spaniards appear to be a bit protectionist with their wine trade.

In other local, Oregon news, here’s what else The Oregonian had to say this week:
I’m not that interested in 2020 election gossiping yet, but sharing this because I was kind of surprised The Oregonian had this article. Usually it’s full of sports news, some crime, and weather. I am lucky to have outstanding Senators, Ron Wyden, and Jeff Merkley. Both are smart, hardworking, and responsive to their constituents, and Wyden especially does ALOT of town hall meetings.
Raise a glass of your favorite beverage, alcoholic, or otherwise, and let’s toast to a strong 2018 for Democrats!
