Good evening, Kibitzers! I’m so tired. I’ve been sleeping crappily with this cast on. The wrist hurts some, and I’ve been taking this stuff for pain — it’s just my arthritis drug and I would not have expected it to help, but it does. On the other hand, I don’t usually take it all the time, and it would not surprise me if it is contributing to my wakefulness. Anything that does not come with a warning that it makes you drowsy generally glues me to the ceiling.
So last night, I thought, what if I don’t take any at night? And the answer is, then my wrist hurts! Shocking, I know. It must have been 4 am before I fell asleep, but my eyes popped right open again at about 6:15 and I could not get back to sleep. I finally got up and made some coffee, because on Tuesday mornings I have a meeting and I cannot just nod off. But man, it’s about 2:15 as I’m writing this and I am really dragging. I am working from home because of the wrist, but going to lie down does no good because, while my brain is ready to pass out, my eyes have had quite a bit of coffee. I hope you’ll forgive me if I don’t stay in this diary until all hours. Although, by then, I’ll probably be quite alert.
So all I can offer you is sleep-related stuff; no brain cells for anything else. My favorites, the Beatles, have a surprising number of songs about sleep, only a subset of which can be found on YouTube and those in odd, variant versions. I was looking for Blue Jay Way, but alas, only bad covers. Please don’t be long / Please don’t you be very long / Please don’t be long / Or I may be asleep.
Happy birthday to our dear slksfca!
PUERTO RICO and USVI DISASTER RELIEF DONATION LINKS
The Daily Kos community has its own project: Puerto Rico resident Bobby Neary (newpioneer) leads a small team dedicated to helping a specific rural elder who was left by the storms without power, water, a roof, or any belongings but a moldy mattress. If you like to see concrete results, this is the project for you. See newpioneer’s diaries for ways to help.
PLEASE FOLLOW Denise Oliver Velez and the SOS Puerto Rico group for the latest news about developments in Puerto Rico and the USVI.

Also (no money required here): our friend, the ultra-talented Crashing Vor, is about to have his pocket picked by Google, owners of YouTube, who have apparently forgotten about their motto, “Don’t be evil.” He has just over two weeks to get his Youtube channel up to 4,000 hours of viewing in the past year, or they will take away his ability to carry ads. The ads bring in very little money directly, but you may not be surprised to hear that channels carrying ads are prioritized in searches, and searches bring him new listeners/customers.
If you haven’t heard his excellent music and brilliant political ads, do yourself a favor and go to his channel and watch some. If you’re keen to help him out, I will share that I’ve been opening his video page every day, clicking “PLAY ALL”, and then clicking the LOOP symbol on the right. (It briefly shows a “Loop is on” message in the lower left of the screen.) Then I mute the sound so I can work or sleep, and let it play all day and night. Eventually it crashes the browser tab and has to be restarted, but it’s usually good for over 24 hours at a time.
If anyone would care to join me in this, please do. There are not enough hours left for me to get him over the line by myself, but a group of people could do it. Pro tip: it looks as if, if you leave the sound on, YouTube puts up longer and longer ads if you don’t hurry over there and skip the ads when possible. If you mute the video’s sound, apparently YouTube knows that and doesn’t bother to show many ads, thus not cutting into the time CV’s videos are playing. No, I have no idea what they’re thinking.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well. |
