Right on cue, Donald Trump has moved on to his next bid to run interference on the Russia investigation and his ties to the Kremlin. Of course, to date, all his "bombshells" have bombed, but perhaps this will be the "bombshelliest" of them all!
What can be immediately gleaned from this desperate Trump tweet is that the texts are definitively not "bombshells" but rather the next crackpot conspiracy theory floated by Fox and ingested by Trump during his "executive time." Sure enough, Fox was on it:
Newly revealed text messages between FBI paramours Peter Strzok and Lisa Page include an exchange about preparing talking points for then-FBI Director James Comey to give to President Obama, who wanted “to know everything we’re doing." [...]
The new texts come from a report released Wednesday by Trump's Senate stooge, Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, who waded into the GOP’s FBI text offensive last month with the incendiary charge of an FBI "secret society," which he then dismissed less than 48 hours later.
The new GOP theory appears to be that Obama micromanaged the investigation into Clinton, thus the focus on the Obama wanting “to know everything we’re doing" text. NBC News writes:
The report says that "this text raises additional questions about the type and extent of President Obama's personal involvement in the Clinton email scandal and the FBI investigation of it."
At Wednesday’s White House briefing, press secretary Sarah Sanders called the texts a “great cause for concern” and said the White House hopes “it’s thoroughly looked at.”
Okay, so let's just tease out this new GOP hit job: Obama was supposedly so intimately involved with the FBI investigation into Clinton and clearly biased in her favor that he, uh ... well, he forced then-FBI director James Comey to publicize the inquiry far and wide and, ultimately, to launch his infamous October surprise press conference announcing a new batch of emails and putting the final nail in the coffin of her candidacy.
Wait, what? Yep, that's what that conspiracy theory amounts to: Obama was too heavy-handed in managing the investigation that ultimately killed Clinton's electoral chances. And by the way, the FBI agent in question, Peter Strzok, also supported reopening the investigation into Clinton when the new emails were discovered, but Ron Johnson doesn’t appear to be talking about that.
You wanna talk about scandal? How about GOP leaders Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan squelching Obama's efforts to publicize Russia's interference in the election before people went to the polls?
Any chance that interests you, Ron?
