Like everyone else with a heart and soul, I’m just stunned, sickened, and outraged by the latest school shooting. And listening to all the talking heads, one of the first points that come up is “Well, you can’t take away everyone’s gun.” That’s right — now that the NRA has ensured that any idiot in America can own their own personal arsenal, there’s no putting that genie back in the bottle. But there’s one thing we still CAN control — the ammo. You can have 1,000 guns but without the ammo, they’re nothing but expensive cudgels or paperweights.
So, how about it, Congress? How about we pass some laws that make getting your hands on ammunition a lot harder and a lot more expensive? How about taxing the shit out of ammo purchases and earmarking that money for mental health care or helping the victims of gun violence? How about limiting how much, and what kind of ammo, the average citizen can buy? And while we’re at it, make all future sales of assault weapons illegal again. No American civilian needs an assault weapon, period. And tell everybody who DOES own an assault weapon — we’re watching you. No, I mean, we’re REALLY watching you now.
This is just a half-formed idea, and I’m sure there are lots of arguments that can be made and lots of logistics to work out. I’m just tossing this out there as a possible solution. Thoughts?
