Good evening, Kibitzers! Having been thwarted by sheets of ice in my effort to go meet up with peregrine kate a couple of weeks ago, I had been hoping, this past Sunday, to have a somewhat less ambitious brunch with a friend. About midweek, the weatherman started mentioning there might be a little bit of snow on the weekend, no big deal. This got my attention. I’m still limited to doing anything vigorous one-handed; that mostly includes driving and definitely would include snow shoveling.
Over the next couple of days, the weatherman got to be like, well, maaaaybe up to three inches of snow in my area, and by Saturday, we were at three to seven over Saturday night, ending 4 am Sunday. At that point, I knew brunch was off. By 10 pm Saturday, we already had 8 inches on the ground here — I know because I opened the door and stuck a ruler into the undisturbed layer on the steps. As it turned out, it did not continue until 4 am, thank goodness, so we got only another inch or so after that.
So here’s the crazy part: I am making no attempt to shovel the driveway one-handed, because by Wednesday, it’s supposed to be 72 degrees. Look at this National Weather Service chart! I’m writing Monday night, so that’s what “tonight” is:
By Thursday night it’s freezing again, but by that time, even the dreaded plow berm ought to be history. This is February in northern New Jersey. In case you were in doubt, that is not a setting where a temperature of 72 is anything but insane. When the TV newscasters giggle about how nice and warm it will be, I just have to shake my head.
But anyway, I got up early on Sunday to look outside, just in case everything had magically melted already and I could go to brunch after all. It had not, but I took some pictures.
The view out the back window is to the south, and this was about 7 am on Sunday. The sun was well up, no longer pink, but its direct light starts hitting things south to north. You can see here it’s only gotten as far as the top of that little tree in my neighbor’s yard.
Addendum
Tuesday morning:
Most of the snow has gone to Snow Heaven.
Nice work, red flowers!
So how’s your weather?

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well. |
PUERTO RICO and USVI DISASTER RELIEF DONATION LINKS
The Daily Kos community has its own project: Puerto Rico resident Bobby Neary (newpioneer) leads a small team dedicated to helping a specific rural elder who was left by the storms without power, water, a roof, or any belongings but a moldy mattress. If you like to see concrete results, this is the project for you. See newpioneer’s diaries for ways to help.
PLEASE FOLLOW Denise Oliver Velez and the SOS Puerto Rico group for the latest news about developments in Puerto Rico and the USVI.
