Once upon a time, a motorist would drive up to a service station. The attendant would pump the amount of fuel requested. While the pump was running, someone would clean the windshield and check the oil level (hence the word service). Since payment was usually in cash, the attendant tried to make sure the purchase came out to the nearest dime, quarter, or dollar. Pennies were a nuisance to be avoided.
It is no longer “once upon a time.” Motorists stop at a self-service convenience store, insert a credit card, and pump their own gas. The layers of dead bugs and road film stay on the windshield unless the customer cleans the windshield. Oil and fluid levels remain a mystery.
Here comes the question: When you pump your own gas, do you still try to make the final amount a convenient number such as $22.00 or $17.75? Or is any random number okay? After all, the computers don’t care if you shoot past that round number and end up paying $22.03. Me, I realized early in the Self Service Era that it doesn’t matter.
By the same token, how do you select cooking times on a microwave oven? Do all of your cooking times end in zero? Or do random numbers suit you fine?
Back in the 1990s, a friend of mine had a microwave that was probably at least ten years old. The zero key was completely worn out. Steve had diligently instructed his oven to work in increments of ten seconds. Everything else was forbidden. That inspired me to use every number on my own microwave, a habit I maintain to this day.
One of my other quirks is that I rarely use any of the presets, such as “frozen breakfast,” or “potato.” Minutes and seconds are my preference.
Fun fact: The last two digits on most microwave oven timers will go beyond 60 seconds. You can set the timer for 3 minutes and 99 seconds, and that’s how long the oven will run. Try it. You won’t warp the space-time continuum, honest!
Do you have any habits that are throwbacks to another era? What else is on your mind today? As always, this is an open thread.
