Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich’s (D. NM) re-election campaign:
How much longer will the cycle of gun violence continue?
After every mass shooting, some Republicans offer their thoughts and prayers before going on television and claiming that we cannot do anything about these senseless deaths. It is as if they believe we don’t know enough about the gun violence epidemic to address it.
But how can we ever know enough when government scientists are blocked by law from researching gun violence?
It’s time to finally end the prohibition against researching gun violence in America.
Passed into law twenty-two years ago, the Dickey Amendment prevents the Center for Disease Control from researching gun violence. If Republicans are going to make their support for common sense gun control conditional on more information, then it’s time we allowed the CDC to do its job and treat gun violence as what it is — a public health crisis.
I need you to join me and call on Congress to come together so we can protect our children, students, and families. Add your name to the growing list of Americans demanding the Dickey Amendment be repealed now.
Three of the worst shootings in American history have happened in the past two years.
How many more tragedies must we face before things change? How many more parents will get a text that their kids are hiding in a classroom? How many more communities will gun violence tear apart before Congress acts?
We have tried for a bipartisan solution to end this cycle of gun violence for years, and yet here we are again.
This is not the solution, but it’s a place to start.
Repealing the Dickey Amendment will give us the facts to tackle gun violence head on.
Scientific studies, not politics, should be our guide to solving the gun violence epidemic in our country.
Add your name to the list of Americans who are demanding the Dickey amendment be repealed.
Thanks,
Martin
