Oh, look who suddenly claims to support strengthening background checks for guns. Donald Trump is feeling the pressure as the brave Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students wage their fight for their lives and the lives of students like them. But it’s going to take a lot more pressure to turn these empty words into action:
Democrats have been focusing on that since Sandy Hook, and Republicans blocked it, you vile unprintable. Also, Trump’s very own budget cut funding for the gun background check system. Republicans block it, Trump cut it … are we supposed to give him credit for bipartisanship with that “Whether we are Republican or Democrat” nonsense? Are Democrats supposed to be like “ooh, we better shape up and get on board with Trump on this one”?
Trump’s oh-so-brave position on strengthening background checks specifically is also worth talking about, because background checks got 97 percent support in the latest Quinnipiac poll. Seriously: 97 percent. But an assault weapons ban got 67 percent support and mandatory waiting periods had 83 percent support. If Republicans can’t get on board with those things with their huge support, no credit for trying to soak up some of the super massive ginormous support of background checks—especially until they actually do something more than talk.
