Two things that people say about me, well two sort of nice things, is that I am really fast, and that I keep trying. Well, yeah, I guess that’s true. I am fast, but I don’t remember if people thought that when I lived in the North, (I forget fast) or if it’s just the people in the South who think I’m fast.
When the kids across the street want to go somewhere with me, they ask if I’m going to “be doing that fast walking”. I didn’t realize that I did “fast walking”, it’s just that I have a life and going to a store isn’t something I want to spend all day on a Saturday doing. I want to get in and out, so I guess, yeah, I do fast walking.
I walk fast, I talk fast, I even listen fast.
I do try hard and mostly that’s a good thing, but there is one time when trying is very, very bad - an eye exam. I did it once too, because, it’s just what I do; squinted and focused as hard as I could. When my glasses came in, I paid for them and walked around a bit and realized that I couldn’t see shit.
I got another eye exam and this time didn’t try a bit. By that second line I said I didn’t know, and by the third line had to admit I didn’t even care. The glasses I got from that exam worked perfectly
Sadly, once I gave up on trying, just that one time, it spread to other areas of my life.
Not only do I not try or care on a regular basis, I’ve even stopped wearing glasses.
Life just seems a little softer when it’s slightly out of focus and blurry.
Monet was onto something.
A funny story about Dwight Yoakum, he walked into a restaurant here in Nashville, Houston’s, (a chain like Fridays) and they wouldn’t let him in because of his ripped jeans; his trademark ripped blue jeans. He just said “Well, ma’am, these jeans have made me an awful lot of money, I guess I’ll go spend it somewhere else". And he did, at a restaurant at least 3x more expensive than Houston's.
That’s one of the reasons I moved to Nashville, I pretty much wear jeans everywhere and it's accepted pretty much everywhere here. Houston’s closed down years ago.
I just found out I have to work late tonight, so if I miss “ya’ll”, I will be reading and reccing your comments at least.
