An apparent suicide bomber threw an explosive device, probably a hand grenade, into the U.S. Embassy compound in Podgorica, Montenegro, just before midnight, Wednesday February 21, 2018. The attacker then apparently blew himself up. No other injuries have been reported and the building was not damaged..
At this point, there is no information about who the person was or what his motive might have been. The official State Department position is that “the State Department [does] not know what the motive for the assault was or whether it was meant to be a suicide attack.”
Some have speculated that the attack may have been related to the current tense situation between Montenegro and Kosovo concerning the border between the two countries.
U.S. citizens have been advised to avoid the Embassy until further notice.
