I’m really glad that young people are finally waking up to the impact political activism can have on policy. It’s good to see them drawing attention to the deadly issue of gun violence. But I’m concerned about some of the language that is being used. The effort to be “nonpartisan” over a VERY partisan issue will only protect Republicans when they start proposing BS reforms like arming teachers and raising the age for people to buy assault weapons (that works so well for alcohol).
The inexperience of youth can sometimes make it difficult to realize just how disgustingly dishonest most Republican politicians are. So I hope that the young people in the streets will understand that this is not about “the government”, or “politicians”, this is about Republicans lacking all empathy for people outside their immediate circle and caring far more about their delusional base than the lives of kids in schools.
The kids can’t fall into the “both sides do it” trap or they’ve already failed. From issues like the environment, health care, wealth distribution, discrimination, national security… it’s NOT bipartisan. It’s a cold hearted, corrupt Republican party trying to take us back to the 1800’s while a not perfect Democratic party is trying to protect our country and move it forward.
This is what is happening in Colorado.
But here in Colorado, Republican lawmakers moved forward with three bills that would loosen gun restrictions.
House Minority Leader Patrick Neville, (R) who was a sophomore at Columbine High School in 1999, the year of a deadly shooting, again proposed a bill to allow concealed-carry permit holders to bring guns inside K-12 schools.
…
But the House State, Veterans and Military Affairs committee voted 6-3 against this proposal along party lines Wednesday night.
...
The committee voted down another Republican-sponsored bill Wednesday night that would allow business owners and employees to use deadly force against intruders. It is also expected to vote down a bill that would repeal the state’s ban on high-capacity magazines.
“I have heard these bills for five years now, and I keep coming back to the fundamental idea that it’s absurd to suppose that the way to reduce gun violence is to add more guns to the mix,” said Rep. Mike Foote, D-Lafayette, chairman of the committee.
It’s not about “politicians”, it’s not about “the government”, it’s not about being “bipartisan”, it’s about Republicans! The only way to start reversing the decades of disastrous pro gun policies of Republicans is to stop voting for Republicans and start voting for Democrats who want to take the country in a sane direction. Voting matters!
