This is almost certainly a hoax, a prank, but it has set this entire community on edge. The high school is swarming with cops today, and there’s a heightened presence at my son’s middle school and my daughter’s elementary school, which is just down the road from the high school. My Facebook feed is filled with posts from concerned friends and parents who are keeping their kids home from school today. There are probably more cops there than students today. Even though the middle school wasn’t threatened, my son really didn’t want to go to school today. He says he doesn’t feel safe.
The only idea being floated by the ‘pubs, from the president on down, to address the issue is arming teachers--who no doubt would have to pay for their own training and guns. I just don’t understand how the idea of his teachers packing heat, the day to day seeing teachers with guns, and a paramilitary presence in the hallways in a school under a permanent siege mentality, would make my son feel any safer.
This has all got to stop! As a first step, I’m ready to say, “That’s it! NO MORE GUNS!”
Unlike that school district somewhere in Texas which is threatening to suspend students for protesting, there was a walkout at my son’s school yesterday, and the administration helped facilitate. At noon, three hundred students filed silently outside and stood by the flag pole for 17 minutes, and then returned to class.
