How can an alleged human being, whom according to a Navy admiral physician actually has a pulse, be so completely incapable of expressing the simplest and most basic human emotions. every time I see him in one of these situations, he reminds me of that Star Trek character, Data, an android who is constantly frustrated by his inability to understand human emotions. But at least Data tries, Trump doesn't even bother.
The administration never should have let Trump televise that "listening session," he couldn't have come off worse. He looked around the room constantly when others were talking, looking down at his feet, twisting the stupid cheat card in his hands, and when he spoke, he had all of the sincerity of the Abraham Lincoln animatronic President reciting the Gettysburg Address at Disneyworld.
Trump literally sulked when parents, teachers, and survivors told him that allowing teachers to start packing heat, and turning hallways into the OK Corral was a stupid idea. At sometime during the session, every person in the room was wiping a tear from their eye, and Trump looked like he was waiting for the commercial break on Fox and Friends to end. Too bad there was no Tivo for a live event, huh?
Trump is already saying stupid shit, talking about stricter background checks, banning bump stocks, and raising the age to purchase assault weapons, positions that place him in direct contradiction, and which he's going to have to back down from, and he's doing it for one simple reason. And he's doing it for the worst possible reason. He's doing it because the Parkland survivors have done something that nobody in the Trump administration would dare to do, they have knocked him out of the spotlight. A phoenix has arisen from the ashes of the high school shooting, and His Lowness has been relegated to the role of afterbirth.
And the NRA is even worse, they've become unhinged. Clearly the NRA understands full well what I've been writing about for two days now, this is a fundamental sea change that can be an existential threat to them. Some NRA spokesscum at C-PAC today tried to shame the media for living for the ratings from mass school shootings, and debasing "crying white mothers." Fashion tip woman. It's not a good idea to wear a gunmetal mini skirt when your racism slip goes all the way down to your ankles. And Pee-Pee LePew Wayne LaPierre wasted time in trying to scare everybody in the country with the fact that their children are terrified to go and learn their ABC's and only Colt, Ruger, Sturm and Ruger, and the guardian angels of the NRA can protect them. Throwing vicious mud in a screeching voice at a bunch of grieving school shooting survivors calmly espousing perfectly valid points is the kindergarten primer way to lose a debate. They are treating teenage kids and their parents like goddammt libruls and politicians, and that's a guaranteed loser as a strategy.
Marco "Polo" Rubio is currently awaiting doctors permission to remove his colostomy bag. And what happened to him at that town hall last night should be a warning shot to every NRA friendly politician. When Rubio was asked if he would support banning AR-15's, Rubio responded that to solve this problem you would have to ban all assault weapons, getting his biggest applause line of the night. Freudian slip there Li'l Marco? And when asked directly if he would refuse to take a dollar from the NRA, he did his ostrich impersonation, and actually said "Look, the NRA is buying into my agenda, I'm not buying into theirs." Right. The NRA actually gives a shit about your wanting to take healthcare away from potential shooting victims, cutting taxes for the rich, and worrying about undocumented immigrant kids, it keeps them up nights.
The NRA and the GOP are in the hurt locker here. They are fighting WWII battles using WWI weapons and strategy. Up until now, pushback to the NRA and their political lapdogs have always been small activist groups, and politicians, and everybody already hates politicians, and activist groups are all commie lefties, right? And they're isolated. Now, they are going up against everyday teenagers and their parents, and they're not cooperating. First of all, they're sympathetic figures, and the teen protests are spreading nationwide. People are not going to take very kindly to people who could be them getting beat up on by the NRA and GOP politicians. And second, they're not playing "victims," something the NRA can brush off as just being overwrought. They are not crying about what happened to them, instead they are calmly and passionately demanding that it never again happen to anybody else! And if you're a teenager, a parent, or a teacher, an aunt or an uncle, who would you rather listen to, kids who just want to live long enough to have cars and homes, or a group that wants to turn America's schools into enclosed carnival shooting galleries?
Trump has made the mistake of opening his big, fat New York gob, dragging the GOP with him, and people are going to hold his feet to the fire, these kids certainly will. Longevity is going to be the key. If the national rally day on March 24th garners the support level the last couple of days have, Trump, the NRA, and the GOP are in a world of trouble. Simply because the rally is going to take place right at the start of the primary season for most states, and if it's successful, it is going to make sensible gun control a major issue, and if there's one thing the GOP really doesn't need, it's another divisive issue to have to take a stand on. Don't touch that dial.
