Good evening, kibitzers. It’s getting close to midterm grading time (how is that possible?), which means it’s time to start building up my YouTube procrastination playlist. I kid, I kid...mostly. This evening, I thought I would share one of my favorite YouTube channels that I got hooked on recently, the content of which might be of interest to some here: Real Life Lore.
I actually stumbled upon this channel accidentally, while going down a YouTube rabbit hole looking for videos about the universe. I’m generally a fan of space-related videos that blow my mind, so I was particularly intrigued when I found this Real Life Lore video on how large the universe is (or, conversely, how small we are):
I enjoyed the narration style and the animation, and of course the content, so down the Real Life Lore rabbit hole I went. This guy has fascinating videos on things I hadn’t even thought of before, ranging from science to economics to geography, among other topics. For example, this video, which tries to visualize Pablo Escobar’s wealth:
Or this one, which visualizes the scale of the largest nuclear weapons in the world compared to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You know, in case you don’t want to sleep tonight given who controls the stockpiles.
I particularly enjoy his geography-related videos, such as this one visualizing a hypothetical global highway system:
He even has you covered in case you were thinking about developing a survival plan for a zombie apocalypse:
A few more of my favorites...trying to visualize the tallest structure humanity could feasibly build:
Euthanasia coaster!
His latest video is about how to become the world’s first trillionaire. Spoiler alert: You’re going to need to figure out how to mine asteroids. No big deal.
What do you want to kibitz about tonight?
